The Perseid meteor shower is expected to peak overnight Aug. 12-13 and will be visible across southern Ontario and other parts of Canada. This annual night-sky event is known for producing a significant number of meteors, with reports of up to 100 meteors per hour.

Nikhil Arora, an astrophysicist at Queen’s University and Education and Outreach Officer at , is available for interviews to provide insights into the Perseids, including the characteristics of the shower, such as the bright, fast meteors and occasional fireballs, as well as their origin from debris left by Comet Swift-Tuttle.

While moonlight from the full moon and smoke from forest fires may reduce visibility to some extent, the Perseid meteor shower remains a noteworthy opportunity for observation. Additionally, a close conjunction of the planets Jupiter and Venus will be visible in the morning sky around the same time.
